Kinja'd!!!

Dear Oppo Readers,

So few of you probably know, but for some time now I have been wanting to buy a car so that I can not use my truck as my sole daily driver. I drive what many would consider a "Bro Truck" but even though looks can be deceiving...I do use my truck as a truck quite frequently and because of this when I moved to San Diego for my jab back in August I knew I wanted to buy a car to keep the unnecessary miles off the truck so I can just keep it around as a truck.

Kinja'd!!!

(40ft 5th wheel...empty weight somewhere near 14K-15K pounds. Tows it like a champ down the highway. 55-60mph on flat highway averaged 12mpg...gotta love the diesel!)

Anyways so on to the vehicle I suspect more of you will be interested in. I knew that the car I wanted was a B8 or B8.5 Audi S4. I started my search for a used one and trying to find one with all the options I wanted was proving to be a challenge. So long story short, I ended up with a brand new one for cheaper (due to it being a lease...I will explain my logic later) black on black, 6 speed manual, sports diff, black optic package, 2014 Audi S4!

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

So here she is in all her glory. Had 25 miles on it when I picked it up. Drove it home from LA so has just over 200 on it now. It is my dream car. I could not be happier. I started it as a lease because I could keep my monthly payments so much lower than If I started financing it. Also, the residual on the car at the end of the 3 year lease is 31 grand, which I don't know how many of you check the market for a 3 year old S4 with all these options but they are going for a lot more than that, and I did TONS of research to see what people were paying on their leases, how many of them were ending up with equity and how much etc. I got a smoking deal on the car and It was the best way for me to get my dream car right now.

So obviously now I drive two vehicles that could be considered douche-y. But I put the picture of my truck on there to show that you can't always judge a book by its cover. I love both of my vehicles now and I just wanted to share them with you guys.

I love the S4. I love even more the S4 with the Super6 in it. Congrats buddy! Make sure you buy it at the end of your lease and tune the shite out of it.

Very jealous of your manual transmission. I would have kept my B8 S4 had it had three pedals. Those are my favorite wheels too.

Thats my plan. I told myself that no matter how i got the car (bought it outright, lease, finance) it has a 4 year 50K mile warranty and I would be an idiot to tune a 50 grand car right away and ruin that warranty. But trust me...I have the list of mods ready :)

Yea after the manual trans, the black optic package was probably the second most important option I wanted. Well that or the Sports Diff (which this car has)

Cool car for sure. I like it! But why do you care what random internet users think about what you drive? Why are you apologizing to douchey Jalopnik readers who most likely live in their parent's basement and drive a 1997 Jetta?

Finding a manual transmission in Vegas is freaking impossible. I looked and looked and looked. finally the salesman convinced me to try the DCT, which was lightning fast and a bit fun at first, so I bought it, then it became tedious and boring. but the sport diff is awesome. Does the manual trans have a two stage built in for launches? the DCT did and it was fun just to launch the thing off the line next to guys who thought they were bad ass in their camaros and mustangs.

I don't think the manual has any launch control or anything. It does rev match on downshifts which is a nice feature if you can't do it yourself. I have driven a few DCT S4's as well and i told all the salesmen it is a great trans and it shifts super fast and its wonderful....BUT i knew if I ever bought a sports car it would have to be a manual. And to me the wait was definitely worth it.

Truth be told I don't care what people think at all. I am well aware of the comments people make when they see my truck and if i honestly cared what people thought I wouldn't drive it. I just respect MOST of the oppo readers and try and keep a neutral bias on here. Don't want to piss anyone off and I want to try and keep a nice reputation here is all.

That's good. I like somebody who is balanced. But I still don't understand why you 'care' about these oppo readers. Have you actually met any of them?

I understand not wanting to piss anyone off. But I still don't understand why owning a 'bro' truck requires you to answer to anonymous internet users.

Putting that caveat that he "knows he owns a 'bro' truck" just keeps the troll away and keeps the comments more focused on the main point of the post. At least, as far as I can tell.

So this is what I was thinking of replacing my 2012 A5 with once the lease is up. I plan on taking advantage of my A5's low $25k residual value and then selling it for ~10k profit to put down on an S4 or S5, or maybe something else... Haven't driven an S4 or S5, but I assume that it is similar to my 6MT A5, but with moar power. Did you get a chance to drive an S5 before deciding on the S4?

Kinja'd!!! TJDMAX > hangus77
04/21/2014 at 11:16

Kinja'd!!!0

I didn't drive the S5 but i have driven a 2.0T A5 with a manual. The S4 obviously has more power but the transmissions in either car just feel great. The DCT in the S4 is a great trans but the manual honestly doesn't get enough credit. It is one hell of a smooth box.

I didn't look at the S5 mainly because I knew I wanted a 4 door. Its 10 grand cheaper to start with, and it is more practical for me to have 4 doors. So I can't give a fair comparison between the S4 and S5. But the engine (same in both) is incredible too.

I don't know if I could get a German car that wasn't leased.

Cause at least when things go wrong (Oh trust me, they will. I knew a few guys with B8s. The stories are amusing if not mystifying), I'd rather not be stuck with a boat anchor of a car.

The upside is that if you truly prefer that level of punishment, Audi residuals let you buy out at prices far lower than what the private market prices are, which means more money for mods. If you haven't started already that is.

Kinja'd!!! TJDMAX > Victorious Secret
04/21/2014 at 11:43

Kinja'd!!!0

Yea that is a big reason why i started as a lease. I intend on buying it out at the end because that residual is so low compared to market value (current market value...things may change in 3 years with new generations coming out etc but who knows). From what I can tell though the B8 cars had a few issues back in 2010 and 2011 but i haven't seen any big issues that widely effected lots of owners....I think its a fairly stout engine and car all together.

well thank you. Suspension is stock (torsion bars cranked to level it but not a lift), tires are picked because i do some off roading and driving to snow and such, and yea i do use my truck. It has douche bag qualities i know...it has a 5" exhaust and even though I fabricated those bumpers myself (with the design help of my brother) they can look like something a bro truck would have, but its ok cause i love that truck too. It was my first baby and i'll never get rid of it.

yea...its impossible to do E brake turns with that button...but there was no option for a regular e brake...its the way of the future i suppose. I'm not that unhappy by it though. It is kind of cool when you use it...makes you feel like a fighter jet pilot...or maybe thats just me....

04/21/2014 at 11:56

Kinja'd!!!0

Yea it was all taken care of, but just bizarre.

But since they started shoving the engines into every car they make, the problems have been more or less squished. At least, no more exploding engines.

You still get the genuine German shenanigans everywhere else, but thats just with the territory.

04/21/2014 at 12:01

Kinja'd!!!0

Yea and i was well aware of that when buying it. Another reason i ended up going with a new car. Its not anything major i'm worried about, its the little shit in 7 years that will annoy me, but hopefully i still have the car and i won't mind fixing that little stuff because at that point it'll be out of warranty and i have lots of plans for it when that day comes.
